Why A National Chidhood Obesity Awareness Month?

In the past four decades, obesity rates in the United States have soared among all age groups.  This rise in obesity rates has affected our youth in alarming fashion. Childhood obesity has increased more than fourfold among those ages 6 to 11. Over 23 million children and teenagers in the United States ages 2 to 19 are obese or overweight, a statistic that health and medical experts consider an epidemic.  And this epidemic puts nearly one third of America’s children at early risk for Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and even strokeconditions usually associated with adulthood.  Even greater disparities exist among young Hispanics and children of color.

But there are opportunities every day to change these trends.  And this September, there is an extraordinary opportunity to build awareness and take action – nationally, as well as in your state, city, workplace and home.

The American Cancer Society - 2010 Relay for Life

Fighting cancer is a team effort. The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone.

This year BMR Health & Fitness embarked on a challenge to participate in the fight against cancer by joining The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.  The relay was a 24 hour walk and camp out over night at Pennsbury High School from June 26th to June 27th, raising money and awareness for this great cause.

We created Team BMR, made up of family, friends, and clients of BMR Health & Fitness.  As it was our first relay, we accepted a modest goal of $1,000, crushing it with nearly $1,700!  Overall, the relay raised over $82,000!  A great success!

It was an emotional two days, full of honoring those lost and celebrating those still here.  It was fun as well, camping out and playing football in the middle of the night thanks to the Pennsbury High School football field lights.

Thank you to all who contributed financially and especially those who joined the team and walked with us in our fight to end cancer: Renee and Brody Rodriguez, Leanne Purkis Blevins, Barbara Trifiro, Rob Biernat, Stephanie Cloman, Melissa and Louis Surkin, and a special thanks to our survivor/ walker, Doreen Savona Ruffe.
